The Vine

The truest challenge of leadership is becoming that which you expect of everyone else. We expect our subordinates to show initiative. We expect our employees to always do the right thing. We expect those we work with to be loyal. We expect a great many things of others. But how much do we expect of ourselves?

Becoming a leader that others want to follow is no small task- and it takes daily effort on our part. There are always next steps when it comes to developing the people around you- always goals for developing your team. Yet, no developmental plan will ever replace the impact that your example has on the people around you.

So how much time are you devoting to bettering yourself? Are you taking time away from the hustle of the office to spend with your family? Are you seeking a sense of meaning in your life- providing yourself with goals and aspirations that you can work toward? Or are you merely “surviving” the grind known as your life?

If you’ve ever taken a tour of a vineyard, you’ll notice that the people responsible for the vines are meticulous in their examinations on a daily basis. They will walk from row to row examining each vine by hand. If a vine is failing to bear fruit, they cut it out as though it were cancerous. Good leaders should be as meticulous in their self-examinations. If there is something that refrains you from becoming the leader you want to be (i.e. poor time management, a toxic friendship, lack of direction in your life, etc.), it’s time to grab the shears and prune that problem from your path! Simply put: “A withered vine bears no fruit, but a pruned vine bears a harvest.”
