Defining the Difference

Theories abound about what makes those who achieve wealth and fame so different from the average citizen. Some say it’s genetic, others say it’s pure luck. Some scientists have gone so far as to study bone structure, genetics, dietary input, lifestyle choices, etc. all in search of a common denominator. From my perspective, the answer is simple: PASSION.

I don’t care what example you give- John D. Rockefeller; Henry Ford; Walt Disney; Howard Hughes; Aristotle Onassis; Sam Walton; Warren Buffett; Donald Trump, Richard Branson; Oprah Winfrey, Steve Jobs, or Bill Gates- the common theme is that they had/have such passion for their ventures that they never let anything get in the way of their long term success- not even a temporary failure.

This common theme is true in business and in life. Passion for what you’re doing, who you’re with, and where you are going is the single most important difference between those who are enormously successful and those who settle for “good enough”.  And while some people get it right in business and some get it right in life and relationships, it’s very important that we seek to find a balance between the two.

Donald Trump is infamous for his rise to wealth, near bankruptcy, and ultimate rise back to stardom. He’s passionate about living large and it shows in everything he touches. Steve Jobs has created an Apple empire through his passion for design and technology. Sam Walton built his fortune by being passionate about bringing economical goods and services to the everyday consumer- and now you can hardly drive one hundred miles without seeing a Wal-Mart.

You can’t manufacture passion. If you could, someone would have bottled it for sale. You can’t fake it either. People who merely work for a paycheck stand out sorely against those who work for the sheer satisfaction of what they are accomplishing. You have to actively search for it, be committed to it, and push yourself every day to reach new heights to keep it alive. It doesn’t matter if you’re thinking about your spouse, your children, your work, or your hobby. The rules are the same and those who play by them win big- in business and in life.

This week I challenge you to search for that spark in your life- whether that is your job, your family, your friends, a charity you’re passionate about, etc. Identify why it means so much to you and make it a point to invest some of your time to nurturing it this week (and every week). Life without passion is dull and unrewarding. Only you can choose to infuse your week with something that gets you motivated to accomplish great things. Now is the time to stop stalling and get moving in the right direction- let your passion lead you to the next level!
